Civil Disobedience and Non-Violence – Leo Tolstoy

Patriotism in its simplest, clearest, and most indubitable signification is nothing else but a means of obtaining for the rulers their ambitions and covetous desires, and for the ruled the abdication of human dignity, reason, and conscience, and a slavish enthrallment to those in power. And as such it is recommended where ever it is preached.

It’s true. Independent thinking is not taught or nurtured, because of control.
Those that managed to shake off control and dominance, ‘them rebels’ think for themselves.
In this sense the verse, you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free. (Gospel of John, I assume) The word ‘make’ is important, because being ‘set free’ can be instantaneous, that’s not the case with being MADE free. It takes time and a longer consideration, but above all, independence.
Peoples’ struggles for independence, originate in basic liberties – space in which each individually can develop.
Herding all, like sheep, into one lump is done through uniformity, patriotism, and ideology, which a dictator uses to emotionally manipulate the subject. As a result, anyone emotionally susceptible to such maneuvers falls prey and consequently gets trapped like a bird.
Those who see beyond patriotism have the responsibility to reveal this reality by showing advantages of an independent way of thinking; thus free the bird.
